Worst game ever!

Expectations and excitement can really play on ones emotions; especially when they don’t go as planned. BYU vs UTAH. The biggest game of the season. The one I would make sure to be early to as a student with a large white “Y” painted proudly on my cheek. This sense of pride and excitement as continued beyond my graduation day from BYU, as expected for any cougar fan, and this year was no different. First time up against UTAH as an independent team we had much to prove. We (me and Jeremy) too had much to prove as we are trying to make a name for ourselves here in this new land of Tucson. No doubt we did all the necessary ‘smack talk’ against our rival UTAH friends here in the ward. All was fun and games until kick off.

Worst game ever! Never have I seen such a sloppy game with soo many errors that have lead to such detriment to the game. Talk about embarrassing! We couldn’t even finish watching it to the end. I feel remorse for my fellow brother-in-laws who spend so much time and money to travel to the biggest let down game of the season. Needless to say, disappointment was beaming from the Bowen house Saturday night. This was amplified when we got doorbell ditched by our lovely neighbors who thought it kind to drop off red cupcakes with a bright “U” on them. To our surprise, after the sharp pain of remorse had began to diminish (Sunday), we were surprised to find that the red cupcakes were quite delicious.

Tucson

Well, we moved across the country once again. This time we landed in what Jeremy calls "a resort." He is in love with Arizona and let no time pass before becoming 100% invested in it. He checked out all the cute kid books about AZ so he could learn and appreciate all if it's culture. I'm taking a lil longer to become accustom to it. It doesn't help that we went to the Desert Museum and saw scorpions, a baby and a big rattle snake, and a tarantula while just walking on the path!! Out in the open, roaming free! Not what I want to see when I'm getting used to the desert.

Nonetheless, the weather is finally starting to lower (90s and not 105+) which makes me happy. We have been enjoying our pool right across from our apartment (except when it's late and people decide to have parties! I've learned one thing new about myself; I'm not a light sleeper! I woke up a 2am last week b/c 4 dumb people were talking outside our stairs...go to bed!!) We have also enjoyed having family close by. We've gone boating with Jen & Brad, had body massages with Kayla, Diamondbacks game with all the Bowens, and watched a BYU football game with Corrine and Gary. It's been great! Now all we have to do is make it out to CALI for a much needed trip to the beach and I'll be satisfied (seriously, we need to go! I've been dreaming about going to the beach lately, sad I know).

Jeremy has really enjoyed law school so far. When he's not worried about what kind of grades he'll get or job prospects, he has enjoyed spending all of his time reading cases. He says he finds them interesting, which is good, but he'll now have to add service to the Elders Quorum into his free time as he was just called to be 2nd counselor in the Elders Quorum.

I have already found myself a lovely community choir at the Univ. which will be helpful to keep me busy! I guess this choir mentality was not enough to just be at the community level as I was just called to be the ward choir director. How fun. I am thankful for something to do after work since my job is about as dull as watching paint dry. I feel like an intern doing my lovely data entry work and feel my brain shrinking every day. I have enjoyed listening to books on tape though; they have been my saving grace! I am grateful for the job, nonetheless, as we all know it is a tough economy. I've been toying with the idea of getting a MBA or Masters in Finance, if babies don't come, since UofA has pretty good programs. That would mean I'd have to take the GMAT though so we'll see :)

8th Grade Graduation for Jeremy's Students

My school holds graduation for the 8th graders at our school since it is the oldest grade at our school. As much as I do not believe in having a graduation ceremony for 8th graders because it gives a false sense of "being done" with school, it was nice to have a closing ceremony with them since I will not be returning.


All the middle school teachers had to share a few words for our departing 8th graders. I chose to talk about details and how it is in the details that I came to love history, and it is in the details that I came to love these 8th graders.

I also shared one of my favorite quotes from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as a parting counsel for them:

"The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight,
but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night."

Final Law School Decision

The decision is made, we are going to the University of Arizona for law school! We are so excited to start this chapter of our life. We have so much to look forward to, but we are leaving a great deal behind (great friends, DC, and all the goodness that goes with it). We have been able to accomplish a great deal while we have been out here and we will continue to look back on these good times. I am coming away with a firsthand experience of urban education in this nation. There is a great deal that needs to occur to close the achievement gap in this nation, but I have learned how much a committed teacher can add to a student's success.
