Memorial Day

Jeremy & I looked for community celebrations for Memorial Day. We miss attending small celebrations with local bands and fireworks that they had in the DC area. Since we didn't find any such activities, we went to the Phoenix Zoo instead. Jen & Kimball Smith joined us too. It was the first time Jeremy had gone and he seemed to enjoy it as much as Emory and the kids. We saw a few animals before letting the kids play around in the splash pad area. It was a good day. We're grateful for the Smiths. It's always fun to share these experiences with such good friends.

We also enjoyed the first family swim in our big pool! It was amazing. Jeremy & I are still pinching ourselves that this is actually our house and our pool. How grateful we are for such a blessing. The kids really enjoy it too. So much in fact, they both took three hour naps after the AM swim.

McKelle's Past Journal

7 months
  • Started crawling the week of Christmas/New Years
  • The week after she started crawling, the first few weeks of January 2015, she started to pull herself up to stand if someone is sitting on the floor
  • She finally has a set nap and bedtime schedule although she still wakes up at least twice a night!
  • Her eyes are started to get a little brown or yellow in them
  • end of 7 months: 15 pds
  • tried lots of new foods: avocado, yogurt, banana, apple, tomato, corn, blueberries
  • She actually drank from a bottle!!
  • Her hair is getting long enough to tuck behind her ear

8 months
  • 25 ¼ inches; 15.6 pds; head 17 in
  • I lay her in bed for naps and bedtime wide awake and she’ll put herself to sleep. It’s amazing. She takes a 2 hour nap at 10am-noon and anywhere from 1-1.5 hour nap at 2pm. She wakes up between 7 and 8am. Goes to bed around 7-8pm. She is ridiculous at night. She wakes up every 4 hours and sometimes less than 4 hours. I’m exhausted!

9 months
  • McKelle gives the cutest open mouth kisses! She’ll put her gummy mouth wide open up to your face and just rub it back and forth while “ahhh”ing at you. I love it!!
  • She can also say “mamma” now and it melts my heart
  • she started standing on our own for a few seconds at a time. She gets the biggest smile on her face and you can tell she’s so proud of herself.
  • she still wakes up 1 or 2 times to eat a night
  • She is getting pretty good at dancing during dance parties. She’ll be on all 4s while shes going to start crawling but she’ll just rock back and forth, like hard! It’s really funny. She loves dance parties and will just giggle while watching us dance

Emory's Past Journal

December 27, 2014 (27 months)

We stayed at Mom’s place because Doug and Derek and their families were/are in town. We put Emory in my Mom’s closet with his pack n’ play. When he would wake up he would yell, “Daddy, help! Daddy, I’m happy now!” because Darcee always tells him that he needs to get his sleep so he can be happy. Cute kid.

He also got into lots of mischief while at Gma’s house. He discovered the hallway pantry with cylinders of wheat and brown sugar. Naturally he thought they looked like dirt so he and Star used his little construction trucks to play in the brown sugar which of course got all over the floor.

By the end of the trip, Derek started to call Emory Curious George. Within a matter of minutes Emory followed Derek into Kayla’s room and got into her essential oils on her nightstand. He opened the peppermint oil and got it all in his eyes. There was lots of crying but thankfully it came out with the tears. Now I can threaten him when he gets into toiletries by saying, “remember the peppermint oil” to which he replies, “Emory cry!” He’ll usually put whatever he has back after the friendly reminder.

Feb 2015 (28 months)
He has started to climb out of his bed again. He did this a few months ago but we moved his mattress all the way to the floor. He still climbed out then but we’d put him in time out so he stopped pretty fast. But, he will climb out every time we put him in there now, with or without time out. So, once we move into our house in a month, he’ll be getting a big boy bed. I don’t think he’s really ready for it tho b/c when he doesn't nap, hes super fussy. He still needs his naps, silly kid, but he probably only naps 2 days a week now. :(

We found a solution to this problem though. He falls asleep in his high chair :), then we move him to his bed. It’s the only thing that’ll work. He will even ask for his high chair now. He’s silly. He just doesn’t know how to turn off his busy body.

We saw a dead bird in the parking lot today on the way to our car. I told Emory the bird was sick and he said, “give bird chicken pot pie.” The reason he said this is because we delivered dinner, chicken pot pie, to a friend when she was sick. I guess that small act of service impacted Emory and I didn’t even know it. He’s too cute. He also suggested we give the bird medicine. Also, as we were backing the car out, he said, “watch out for cars bird. City bus will come smash you.”

We like to listen to music during the day and a jazz song came on with a trumpet playing. Emory stopped what he was doing to play is air trumpet that he learned how to do from a sister missionary. It was really cute!

McKelle's first steps

McKelle took her first steps last Sunday during Relief Society, 3 days after turning one. She has been wanting to walk for the last week or so and would stand on her own fine. But, when it came time to walk, she would lean forward and fall down. I think it's because she leans in her walker to get it moving.

Anyways, she took a good 3 or so little steps during Relief Society. She has since taken one or maybe two steps on several different occasions. I'm sure it'll be no time before she is up and cruising around with her big brother!

Memories of Emory

I wanted to share some recent cute sayings and stories from our little Emory.

We were driving in the car today listening to a CD and the song started to skip. Emory said the song had the hiccups.

Emory calls Q Tips, ear tips.

Emory loves the word "squash" and will try and "squash" his hard boiled eggs, toys and anything else he can get his hands on.

Emory has such long eye lashes that there have been several occasions where his top lashes get stuck in his eye. They get tucked into his lower eye lid. It's crazy.

On the one month anniversary of moving into our new house, Emory celebrated by flooding our master bathroom! He had a fedish with toilets that particular week. I usually have a show on for Emory while I nurse McKelle to sleep for naps but this particular day, McKelle was needing some extra attention after I put her down. So, the show was over and Emory and I were going upstairs to play. I left him for what I thought would be a quick minute while I went in to sooth McKelle to sleep again. Twenty minutes later, I walk out of McKelle's room to hear water running. What I thought was the shower on turned out to be the toilet overflowing with a constant flow of water.

After calling Dennis for advice, I collected every towel and blanket found within our house, baby burp rags included, and began to soak up the 1/3 an inch of water all over our master bathroom. It also went onto our brand new carpet. Despite my best efforts, there was still a leak downstairs on the ceiling.

After calling the professionals and $600 later, the carpets were aired out and the bathroom was dehumidified. I still wasn't exactly sure what he did to cause such damage but it became clear about 5+ days after the event occurred when I finally decided to clean the toilet and turn the water back on. I first cleaned off all the dried toilet paper and began removing the paper that was inside the bowl. to my surprise, with one tough pull, a huge thick wad of toilet paper the same thickness of our pipes came out of the toilet. At that point it became clear that too much toilet paper being flushed down was a bad thing. That silly little boy. Lets just say, we have since invested in more affective child proofing equipment.

The last fun story to share about Emory as of late, includes one of his favorite words. It was Mother's Day and I got the amazing, unexpected surprise of sleeping in for a full hour.  When I went into Emory's room, I found out why this gift was given. He had obviously pooped, the smell made it obvious, but he had also made a mess on the carpet by smashing lotion on the floor. I told Jeremy he had a fun surprise to clean up while I went to feed McKelle.

I heard Jeremy try and put Emory on the changing table but found little pieces of poop there instead. He then brought him into the bathroom to change his diaper and bath him when he found poop smeared all up his back and shirt. I later walked into Emory's room and stepped in poop! It quickly became obvious, by following the poop trail, that he had reached into his diaper, got his hand dirty, and then tried to clean it, knowing that poop was yucky. After wiping his hands on the floor, he opened his drawer, got into the wipes and then must have seen the lotion. I guess he thought that was a better way to clean the carpet than using a wipe.

An hour and a half later, everything in his room was wiped down and cleaned. Ah. At least I was well rested to handle the situation. Happy Mother's Day!

McKelle's 1st Birthday!

We celebrated our sweet little McKelle's birthday this week. She got pampered with her first hair cut and getting her ears pierced. She only cried for a minute and doesn't even notice the earrings now. She looks like such a big girl. We packed away all our "baby" things since we don't have a baby baby anymore. Crazy how fast the year has gone!

She is such a smiley little girl. She loves people watching, is usually pretty easy going and so cute! Diaper changes are basically impossible because she wiggles all over but she's usually pretty content to just sit on your lap. She loves putting things in and out of containers and opening and closing things. Her favorite thing is her pink blanket. She'll roll all over the floor sucking on her blanket. She has her 2 top front teeth showing but has about four other teeth getting ready to pop out any day now. She weighs 17.8 pds and is ?? inches tall. She can stand on her own but when it's time to walk she'll look up at you and giggles, then leans forward with her chest and falls down. She "sings" in the car, very loud, to the point where it's pretty much impossible to hear anyone talk. She can say "mama" and "dada" and makes a noise when it's time to say "amen." She loves to climb on anything like up and down stairs, chairs, oven drawers. She can wave when you ask her to.

She gives the best open mouth kisses and is very thoughtful and purposeful when she gives her kisses. She loves her Momma and looks just like her Momma too.
